When the Pioneering Spirit is launched, there will be individual workmanship from Hannoversch Münden, Germany, on board – and not one piece, but fifty of it. HTT Hochspannungstechnik und Transformatorbau GmbH, manufacturer of transformers with a focus on resin-encapsulated transformers since 1985, already made their contribution to the world’s biggest work boat in the years 2010 and 2011.

The company, which holds the construction and production of demanding individual solutions as its strongest point, provided the Pioneering Spirit with twelve units of two transformers each as well as with 26 distribution transformers, thus offering a total power of an impressive 163 MVA. The transformers are used for the vessel’s thrusters, the engine room, the equipment room, and the winch room. The twelve units that will operate in the area of the thrusters discharge their heat via an air-to-water-cooling-system.

In constructing the fully encapsulated transformers for the giant vessel, HTT attached great importance to the efficiency and compact build as well as the capacity of the components to withstand mechanical stresses. The transformers operate consistently even when the generator-produced current fluctuates.

There is, by the way, a reason for the fact HTT delivered the transformers for the Pioneering Spirit as early as two years ago: The transformers, which are located in the hull of the giant work boat, had to be installed early, before the upper decks were realised and sealed.
